FAQ
Which regulations are relevant for me?
Shipping batteries means dealing with dangerous goods which will require a UN certified packaging. Depending what cells or batteries you are shipping the following types are distinguished:
- UN 3090: Lithium-metal cells or batteries
- UN 3091: Lithium-metal cells or batteries contained in or packed with equipment
- UN 3480: Lithium-ion cells or batteries
- UN 3481: Lithium-ion cells or batteries contained in or packed with equipment
These need to be labelled on your packaging. Another distinction is made based on the energy of your cells or batteries. For example:
- Lithium-ion cells ≤ 20 Wh require packaging and labelling according to SP 188 / PI 965 Section IB.
- Lithium-ion cells > 20 Wh require packaging and labelling according to P 903 / PI 965 Section IA.
Further requirements to packaging and labelling occur when the state of the cell or battery is not new and certified, for example:
- P 908 defect
- P 909 recycling or disposal
- P 910 prototypes
- P 911 critically defect
The UN framework is adapted into legally binding regulations by different organizations:
- ADR / U.S. DOT 49 CFR – Road transport
- IMDG / ADN – Sea transport
- RID – Rail transport
- IATA – Air transport
